Argentina set for abundant rains, set to cap recent crop losses from drought

Major worldwide grains exporter Argentina has forecasted abundant rains over the coming days, which should cap recent crop losses from an extended drought since December last year, Reuters reported.

The long drought has led the country's Rosario grains exchange to cut its projections for corn and soy harvests.

Cristian Russo, head agronomist at the Rosario exchange, said the remainder of the 2021/2022 harvest campaign will see favourable weather patterns, but added that he did not expect losses to be recovered.

Argentina is the biggest exporter of processed soy in the world, and second of corn.

The country has been affected by La Nina climate patterns in the past two years, resulting in less rainfall in the core farm belt.

The Buenos Aires grains exchange said soybean sowing for the 2021/20222 campaign was 95% completed, and corn planting was at 88%.
