China Methionine: High costs, tight availability push up prices
Producers lifted prices while the expenses of production increased with the costs of sulphur, natural gas, methanol and propylene rising substantially. Supplies tightened as local and overseas production was disrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic. Fearing that prices might rally amid supply shortages, feed producers increased stockpiles while making preparations for the upcoming Chinese New Year holidays.
Export prices of dl-methionine climbed to US$2.42/kg.
Price quotes of methionine in Europe increased to the range of EUR2.10-2.30/kg.
Despite low poultry feed consumption, resulting from the inventory shrink, sales of methionine are seen stable as feed producers stock excess inventories. High costs, in conjunction with tight availability, will support methionine prices to stay strong.
