The data of the national statistics office show that in 2011 an on-year rise was observed in Estonia's average purchase price of both pork and beef but the purchase price of mutton and goat meat increased the most.
The price of a kilogramme of mutton and goat meat rose almost 15% to EUR2.668 (US$3.47). In December the purchase price of mutton and goat meat averaged EUR3.054 (US$3.97) per kilogramme, 11% more than in November and 32% more than in December 2010.
A kilogramme of pork cost an average EUR1.65 (US$2.15) in 2011, which is 9.5% more than a year earlier. In December the average purchase price of pork climbed 3.8% from November to EUR1.734 (US$2.25) per kilogramme, an increase of 13.7% in annual comparison.
The average purchase price of beef, at EUR1.831 (US$2.38) per kilogramme, showed an on-year increase of 8.41%. In December a kilogramme of beef cost 1.62% less than in November of the same year but 16.6% more than in December 2010, averaging EUR1.917 (US$2.49).
In 2011 meat processing companies bought 356,900 pigs, 30,700 head of cattle and 5,100 sheep and goats. A year earlier the corresponding figures were respectively 370,400, 36,500 and 4,500.
In December 30,500 pigs and 2,400 heads of cattle were purchased compared to the year-earlier 32,900 and 2,900. The number of sheep and goats, 500, was the same as in December 2010.
