Indonesia forecasts decline in beef and water buffalo meat imports
COVID-19 has crippled the demand for beef and water buffalo meat in Indonesia, resulting in a forecast that expected imports for these products to drop 13% this year.
Reuters reported that the decline will come with the rise of domestic cattle production.
According to Nasrullah, director general of livestock and animal health at Indonesia's agriculture ministry, the import of beef and water buffalo meat is expected to sink to 281,867 tonnes in 2021, compared to 324,019 tonnes last year.
"This is probably due to increasing domestic production and lower demand due to the pandemic," said Nasrullah.
Australia and New Zealand are the key exporters of beef to Indonesia, while India supplies water buffalo meat.
