Fiji looks to aquaculture as means to improve food security, economy
Fiji is looking to aquaculture as a promising sector that would help improve South Pacific nation's economy and food security, Fiji Sun Online reported.
According to the Semi Koroilavesau, the Minister for Fisheries, Fiji brought in around $25 million worth of seafood from Asian countries annually.
"Our second programme is to provide emphasis on aquaculture. Basically, breeding fish, prawns and shrimps within Viti Levu and Vanua Levu will generate a lot of money," Koroilavesau said.
"If we can have this running efficiently, it will benefit us by reducing our foreign exchange spent on importing these products." Koroilavesau added Fiji could one day become exporters of these seafood and freshwater products.
"So, if we are able to sustain and produce our own food and have excess, then we can also export around the other Pacific islands," he said.
