UK meat industry warns of post-Brexit border checks delaying exports to the EU

The British Meat Processors Association (BMPA) said post-Brexit customs checks between Britain and the European Union (EU) have significantly delayed cross-border meat exports, even with lower exports than before, Reuters reported.

The BMPA said British meat companies have cut trade volumes by 20% with the EU and Northern Island for the first two weeks of January to ease into the new customs checks.

But even with reduced meat imports, there have been significant delays at customs checks. Meat companies are gearing up to increase exports, which could further affect the export industry.

Nick Allen, head of the BMPA, said the current paper-based customs and certifications system cannot be used as it cannot cope with an integrated, just-in-time supply chain.

Following an agreement, British trade with the EU remains tariff-free without quotas on goods. However, exporters said they are affected by customs checks delays.

According to the BMPA, some meat exporters have had their consignments returned undelivered, with EU customers turning away from suppliers from the UK.

The BMPA also said some major British hauliers have stopped taking grouped loads (consignment of mixed products). Some 40% of British meat trade exported to the EU is sent using grouped loads.
