India's poultry sector urged to promote chicken and egg consumption
India's poultry industry and the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) should initiate efforts to promote domestic consumption of chicken meat and eggs, said C. Chandrahasan, dean of the Veterinary College and Research Institute.
India's per capita consumption of poultry meat and egg remains low and people should be educated on the products' health benefits, said Chandrahasan.
The dean suggests that poultry farmers could capitalise on the fact that many people, especially the younger generations, now prefer non-vegetarian food.
Chandrahasan said animal husbandry activities should be promoted aggressively in order to meet the growing food demand in India.
Poultry farmers should improve egg quality to increase exports, and to make use of facilities and services provided by the institute to boost the quality of poultry meat and eggs, according to Chandrahasan.
He asked the poultry farmers to improve the quality of eggs to increase exports. They should make use of the facilities and services provided by the institute for improving the quality of poultry meat and egg.
