Events in the next 3 months
In 11 days, the first of two Seafish Trawl Gear Technology and Selectivity Training Courses will start in Hirshals, Denmark. The courses are specially for fishermen from Scotland and part of a Seafish project supported by EMFF (European Maritime and Fisheries) funding.
We've picked nine other events slated within the next three months, including the Korea International Fishing Show (KOFISH 2018), a three-day event that showcases products like fishing gear and accessories associated with this field in the plant, machinery & equipment, and meat, poultry and seafood industries.
Seafish Trawl Gear Technology and Selectivity Training Courses
Hirtshals, Denmark

This year Seafish will be running Trawl Gear Technology and Selectivity Training courses for fishermen from Scotland at the Sintef Flume Tank in Hirtshals, Denmark. The courses are part of a Seafish project supported by EMFF (European Maritime and Fisheries) funding.
These courses will take two days of intensive trawl gear work in the flume tank. Part of the time will be spent going through a standard gear syllabus that is relevant to all trawling and covers the basics of trawl gear and selective devices.
This initial part of the course introduces participants to the flume tank and its capabilities, and provides an invaluable insight for fishermen by allowing them to see what happens to their gear as they make everyday alterations to it.
Time will also be spent demonstrating and experimenting with model trawls and trawl doors (if these are available) similar to those used by the participating fishermen. All commonly used selectivity devices will be demonstrated during the course. The course is suitable for skippers and crew from all sizes of vessel who are interested in expanding their knowledge and understanding of trawl gear.
The course dates are as follows:
Course 1 – Tuesday, Jan. 30 and Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018
Course 2 – Monday, Feb. 5 and Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018
Cost to participants is £100 per person per course.
First day - breakfast in the motel at 7:30 a.m. and a short walk to the Flume tank ready to start at 8:15. Lunch in the North Sea Centre will be at around 12 noon, then back to the flume tank for the afternoon session. The day's training will finish around 4-5 p.m. The second day will be the same routine with the course finishing at a similar time.
As the courses are held at the Sintef flume tank in Hirtshals, flights from the UK to Denmark are necessary. The nearest airport to Hirtshals is Aalborg but at present there are very few direct flights from the UK. Most flights involve a change at Copenhagen or Amsterdam.
Return flights are either early the next morning or in some cases evening. The travel arrangements for each course may vary depending on where the groups are from and which days of the week they are travelling on.

AquaFarm 2018

The second edition AquaFarm, the international conference and exhibition event dedicated to the technologies, products and best practices of sustainable production of fish, will be held on Feb. 15-16, 2018, at the Exhibition Center of Pordenone in Italy.
The event, organized by Pordenone Fiere with the support of national and local institutions, is aimed at a professional audience, and over two days it will present issues in Mediterranean aquaculture and sustainable fisheries, algae cultivation and vegetable crops that rely on hydroponic, aeroponic and aquaponic techniques, known as indoor and vertical farming systems.
The event is addressed to the sector operators in the Mediterranean Sea Basin: from Slovenia, Croatia, Albania, Balkan Area to Malta, Turkey, Spain and Portugal.

International short course: Responsible aquaculture development
February 26 – March 16, 2018

This international short course on responsible aquaculture development for food security and economic progress aims to:
-- train policy makers, researchers, teachers, extension officers, farm managers and private sector representatives in making strategic sector management plans in line with the FAO ecosystem approach to aquaculture;
-- orient them about the possibilities and design principles of more intensive aquaculture techniques such as recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS); and
-- make them familiar with better management practices and certification standards that are growing in importance on the western food market
The course will be organised in cooperation with Wageningen University and private companies.
