Pakistan: Rising poultry prices amid cold weather

A growing demand for chicken and eggs in Pakistan has led to rising prices amidst a cold season.

At present, retail price for one dozen eggs is INR109 (US$2.15), as compared to INR 60-65 (US$1.18-1.28) in summer.

Likewise, the price of chicken is INR156 (US$3.08) per kilogram, while it was around INR110 (US$2.17) to INR120 (US$2.37) few weeks ago.

Talking to APP, many customers urge the authorities to take concrete action against those who are charging high prices for the daily use items including edibles.

Like many other items, the inflation of egg and chicken prices has badly affected the general public.

The low-income groups are already unable to use dry fruits.

Eggs are the only option for them to maintain, keep warm and meet seasonal nutritional necessities.

Their demand has increased manifolds because of adverse weather conditions.

"The situation requires that stern action be taken against profiteers who should be sent behind the bars for the overcharging of edibles. The negligence on the part of authorities concerned encourages traders and retailers to charge the consumers at their will", said Mumtaz, a customer.

"The recent increase in eggs and chicken prices is attributed to the weather as the prices experience an upward trend with an increase in their demand," said Fahad a shopkeeper.

"With more rains, egg prices will go up further", he added.

"Tomatoes, onions, fruits, milk and eggs have become more expensive within the last few weeks while the shopkeepers are fleecing the public… the authorities have failed to take any action to bring down the prices," said Shamila, a housewife.
