Peru approves National Aquaculture Policy

Sandra Belaunde, Peru's Minister of Production, has announced the approval of the National Aquaculture Policy (PNA), a management document prepared over the past seven years to promote aquaculture in the country, Fish Information & Services reported.

Based on the PNA, it is anticipated that by 2030, Peruvian aquaculture will be more competitive, sustainable, climate change resilient, and diversified, increasing the value of its total sales by more than 100%.

Belaunde said Peru's aquaculture seco tris growing at an average of 8% annually since 2016.

The PNA will support this activity across the nation and provide small aquaculture producers with the chance to expand and go global.

With the PNA's approval, it is anticipated that Peru's aquaculture total sales value will also increase by more than 100%, and it will have a larger share of the aquaculture production in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Additionally, it aims to make Peru the fifth-largest producer of aquaculture in the region.

Last year, the country's aquaculture sector was expected to have produced 120,000 jobs, 37% of which were direct and 63% indirect. It also had 13,466 functional units.
