Cost price calculation developed for pigs bearing quality mark in Netherlands

The Wageningen Economic Research has developed a new cost price calculation for pigs with the "Beter Leven" (Better Life) quality mark in the Netherlands.

Beter Leven is associated with improved animal welfare standards.

The new calculation was developed on behalf of the Pig Farming Producer Organization (POV). It aims to provide a more accurate reflection of the actual costs incurred by farmers in raising pigs under these higher welfare standards. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to support sustainable and ethical practices in pig farming.

The cost price calculations will be updated annually for investment amounts, prices, costs and technical results. Every four weeks, there will be an update based on the most recent feed prices.

The next step will be to discuss the calculation with POV members and the chain partners, which is planned for early 2024.
