Marine Harvest's acquisition of Morpol started in December 2012 and concluded in November 2013. Morpol UK has been absorbed into Marine Harvest's Value-Added Processing (VAP) Europe division, said Maiko van der Meer, the managing director of the division.
"The centrepiece of UK plans is the new factory in Rosyth where we will develop both fresh and smoked salmon products for supply to the UK as well as other European and export markets," said van der Meer.
He said no timing is set for the opening of the plant. However, he added that it will be fully operational in 2015 with initial production starting in 2014. The opening of the Rosyth plant, which has capacity to produce around 40,000 tonnes of products, was pushed back several times by Morpol.
Jerry Malek, the founder of Morpol, who sold his shares in the company to Marine Harvest at the end of 2012, wanted the plant to supply directly to UK retailers. The plan never came into action.
On October 16, 2012, John-Paul McGinley, Morpol's chief operating officer and acting CEO from February 2013 to October 2013, said the plant would be operational just before Christmas.
In February, the opening of the plant was pushed back to the first part of 2013. On May 15, it was reported that the opening was expected to open in early 2014. According to the company's annual report, the Rosyth facility was expected to begin operation in 2014.
The acquisition of Morpol by Marine Harvest had seen sources questioning the future of the plant.
