Japan has purchased 139,239 tonnes of US milling wheat for shipment in March, a senior government official said Friday (Jan 13).

The government bought the wheat in three grades in its first regular tender for 2012, said the official with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Japan, one of the world's largest wheat importers by volume, usually purchases milling wheat from the US, Canada and Australia.

Last month it purchased 341,415 tonnes of wheat for shipment between January 16 and February 15.
