Canada approves Lallemand 's yeast additive for cows

Lallemand Animal Nutrition of Milwaukee was approval to use Levucell SC, a yeast additive, in Canadian beef cattle.

Furthermore, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) also approved the company's label that says the product "increases average daily gain when fed as directed" to beef cattle."

CFIA approved Levucell for use in dairy cow rations in 2002, the company said.

The company has also been authorized to sell the additive for both beef and dairy rations in the EU.

Lallemand said that beef trials showed an 8-percnet increase in average daily weight gain. When beef cattle were submitted to the high stress of intensive farming conditions, disease indicators dropped from 17 percent to 3%.

The company further said that improvement in meat quality was noticed with a 50-percent increase in highest carcass grade.

Lallemand is a major supplier of probiotics and sillage in Europe, North America and Africa.
