Hong Kong bans poultry imports from Japan after bird flu case

Hong Kong has banned all poultry imports from Japan with immediate effect after that country confirmed a bird flu outbreak in a southern prefecture.

Hong Kong imported some 1,800 tonnes of frozen poultry products from Japan from January to September last year.

Last Saturday, the Japanese government confirmed the outbreak after 3,900 chickens were found dead at the Miyazaki farm, some 900 kilometers southwest of Tokyo.

Authorities are still trying to determine if it is the H5N1 strain, which is potentially deadly to humans.
