India to export poultry to US
The US has expressed interest in sourcing chicken and other poultry products from India, in light of bird flu outbreaks in China and other East Asian countries.
India's Export Inspection Council (EIC) has been asked by the US to modify its standard of certification to meet American specifications. Director of EIC Shashi Sarin said the council is working with the US on this matter. EIC will not have any problem meeting the US specifications, she said.
Japan, with its stringent specifications, has already recognised EIC certification for Indian poultry products in October 2005.
The US recognition given to EIC certification will give a boost to the Indian poultry industry.
