Philippines to multiply freshwater shrimp production

Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in the Davao Region will embark in the propagation of freshwater shrimp production this year.

BFAR regional director, George Campeon said on Wednesday (Jan 14) the promotion of aquaculture species will invite potential breeders and investors in the region.

Campeon said shrimp is expensive with price currently ranging from PHP300 to PHP500 per kilogramme.

He said there is lack of production of freshwater shrimps as only three regions in the country are producing it.

He also said production of freshwater shrimp is still low and this has not thoroughly taken off.

He mentioned that in their previous planning and summit, 14 focal areas in every region were identified where the species could be grown and produced.

He added that aside from shrimp, BFAR Davao is also getting on the propagation of tilapia and other catfish species.
