LSD case confirmed at farm in northeast of Catalonia, Spain

The agriculture ministry of Catalonia, Spain, reported a new outbreak of lumpy skin disease (LSD) at a farm in Capmany, in the northeast of Catalonia.

The farm did not have all its animals vaccinated.

Despite some cattle being vaccinated, experts have stipulated that all 106 cows will have to be killed.

The Farmers' Union coordinator, Raquel Serrat, said that if the "obligation is to vaccinate, that should be made compulsory." For her, officials should have made sure that all animals were vaccinated.

Due to the new outbreak, all neighboring farms will have to enforce new restrictions for the next 45 days. This is the 18th outbreak registered across Catalonia, with the last positive case recorded on October 24, 2025.

The first case was registered on October 3 in Castelló d'Empúries, just 20 kilometers away from Capmany. Since then, restrictions have led to culling over 2,500 animals.

While restrictions were expected to be lifted on January 8, the new diagnosed cases forced the measures to remain in place.
