Argentina lifts daily corn export limit

Argentina's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries said it has lifted a 30,000 tonne daily limit for corn exports, which had resulted in protests by farmers, Reuters reported.

Farmers withheld crops from market since January 11 as they protested government intervention in the markets. The government said the limit was imposed to ensure food supplies domestically and stable prices.

The ministry said a commission would be established to monitor local corn prices following an agreement with farm groups and export companies.

The daily limit on corn exports replaced an earlier decision by the government to suspend all corn exports in January and February this year. Farmers protested both decisions, calling them unnecessary.
