Wayne Farms expanding Mississippi fresh poultry processing plant

US poultry producer and processor Wayne Farms LLC announced plans to expand its Laurel, Mississippi, fresh poultry processing plant to meet the growing demand for its Ladybird line of poultry products.

The $16.9-million project will expand the company's 116,000-square-foot slaughter and processing facility, and construction is scheduled to start in about one month, Supermarket Perimeter reported last Friday, Jan. 10.

Company officials also bared a plan to automate equipment for its processing line including cutting, deboning, portioning and packaging, as well as new X-ray detection technology, the report added.

Craig Ballantine, complex manager at the plant, said the upgraded plant will include cutting-edge equipment that will enable the Georgia-based company to accommodate the growing demand for the Ladybird products, which are sourced from "humanely raised, all-female birds".

"Demand for the products we produce is increasing, and this expansion will give us the capacity we're going to need to meet it", Ballantine said.

Besides the Laurel facility, Wayne Farms operates fresh processing plants in Albertville, Jack, Dothan, Union Springs and Decatur, all in Alabama; Danville, Arkansas; Pendergrass, Georgia; and Dobson, North Carolina. It also operates two processing plants in Decatur, Alabama.

The project is slated for completion in May.
