Higher US soy exports to China seen this year

The US Department of Agriculture said Monday (January 12) US soy exports for the 2008-09 marketing year will be 50 million bushels higher than originally expected because of strong sales to China.

The new forecast for US soy exports, released in the USDA's monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report, is for 1.1 billion bushels.

The USDA has reported a string of large export sales to China over the past couple of months, with the largest so far reported Monday. A sale of 399,000 tonnes of US soy to China, for delivery in 2008-09, was posted Monday by the USDA. A sale of 115,000 tonnes was reported on January 2, another for 116,000 tonnes on December 18, another for 116,000 tonnes on December 12, another for 120,000 tonnes on December 11 and another for 174,000 tonnes on December 4.
