Argentina soy exports decrease in November
In November last year, Argentine exporters continued to focus on turning the small 2008-09 soy crop into meal and oil and raw soy exports were cut as a result.
The 2008-09 crop was affected by drought, cutting production by about a third from the crop's potential. According to the Buenos Aires Cereals Exchange, soy output from the 2008-09 season plunged to 32 million tonnes from 46 million tonnes a year earlier.
November soy exports totalled 5,808 tonnes, down sharply from the 145,627 tonnes shipped a year earlier, according to the latest data from the National Food Safety and Quality Service (Senasa).
Soy exports in November were valued at US$1.9 million compared with US$55 million a year earlier.
Soy exports during the first 11 months of 2009 totalled 4.4 million tonnes, down from 11.7 million tonnes a year earlier.
During the first 11 months of 2009, 27,156,229 tonnes of soy were crushed, down from 29,313,410 a year ago, according to the oilseed and grain exporter chamber CIARA-CEC.
In November, crushers turned 2,262,790 tonnes of soy into oil and meal, down from 2,538,959 a year earlier, CIARA-CEC said.
China is the main market for Argentine soy exports, buying 3.2 million tonnes of the raw beans during the first 11 months of 2009.
Soymeal exports in November totalled 578,372 tonnes, down from 1.2 million tonnes a year earlier. November soymeal exports were valued at US$229 million, down from US$361 million a year earlier.
Soymeal exports during the first 11 months of 2009 totalled 11.95 million tonnes, up from 11.8 million tonnes a year earlier.
During the first 11 months of 2009, the Netherlands was the biggest importer of Argentine soymeal, buying 1.21 million tonnes. Indonesia followed with 1.18 million tonnes.
November soy pellet and cake exports totalled 19,587 tonnes, compared with 247,941 tonnes a year earlier.
Soy pellet and cake exports during the first 11 months of 2009 totalled 1,730,030 tonnes, down from 2,550,666 tonnes a year earlier.
Iran was the top destination for Argentine soy pellet and cake exports during the first 11 months of the year, followed by Colombia, Malaysia and Ecuador.
