China's Yunnan makes first pork shipment to Hong Kong
Yunnan, a major livestock production province in China, shipped its first frozen pork shipment to Kong Kong late last year with a 10,000-tonne shipment.
The shipment was from Fenghuang Animal Products Co. Ltd, a major processor in the south-west region of China. Fenghuang was also the first company to gain a pork export permit. The company has an annual processing capacity of 1 million hogs.
A spokesman said the company has contracts with the two largest pork retailers in Hong Kong currently, adding that the company intends to expand its operations in the territory this year.
Veterinarians from the Yunnan Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau were sent to the company for inspections to check for prohibited chemicals and ensure the processing, storage and transport of the pork adhered to the strictest hygiene standards. The measure was taken to ensure the shipment would conform to Hong Kong's requirements.
