Shrimp exports from Ecuador reached 85,500 tonnes in November 2022

Ecuador exported 85,500 tonnes of shrimp in November 2022, equal to the amount shipped in November 2021, Fish Information & Services reported.

Ecuador exported 971,000 tonnes of shrimp in the first 11 months of 2022, a 28% increase from the same period last year.

Since China banned imports from several major exporters earlier last year due to the discovery of packages contaminated with COVID-19, Ecuadorian shrimp exports have not increased year-on-year since the summer of 2020.

The average unit value of exported shrimp decreased as a result of the month's lower export volume. Shrimp exports from Ecuador were valued at US$5.80/kg in November, US$0.43/kg less than in the preceding month's average.

Ecuadorian shrimp exports to China were only worth US$5.68/kg on average, a 14% decrease from the same time last year. The price per kg of shrimp exported from Ecuador to the US decreased by 16% to US$6.25/kg. Due to large inventories and weak demand, the majority of major markets have consumed less shrimp.

Just 3% more shrimp were exported from Ecuador to China last month, totaling 47,900 tonnes. 16,500 tonnes were exported to the US, which is 3% less than during the same period. The same period saw a 25% decrease in Ecuadorian shrimp exports to the UK and France, at 591 tonnes and 1924 tonnes, respectively.

Total shrimp exports from Ecuador are still significantly higher than they were in 2017.
