Ukraine projects 5% rise in 2011 meat consumption

The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food is anticipating that meat consumption will rise by 109,000 tonnes or 4.6% to 2.48 million in 2011, compared with 2010, announced Director Anatolii Rozhon.

"If the consumption fund was 2.366 million tonnes last year, we are forecasting that the consumption fund will be 2.475 million tonnes this year. That is objective because the consumption fund has been increasing for the past five years. The increase will be particularly significant this year," he said.

At the same time, he stressed that importation of meat was expected to reduce by about 25,000 tonnes.

Thus, the ministry expects both consumption and domestic production of meat to increase in 2011.

Earlier, data from the State Statistics Service shows that 2.73 million tonnes of meat was produced in 2009 (5,200 tonnes or 0.2% more than the 2.72 million tonnes that was produced in 2008).
