An additional 40,000 swine to be culled in Bulgaria due to African swine fever

Veterinary authorities in Bulgaria will cull a further 39,656 swine in a new African swine fever (ASF) outbreak detected in a swine farm northeast of the country, reported Reuters.

The new ASF case is the second industrial swine farm to be affected by the virus. Six swine breeding farms were hit with ASF in 2019, with more than 130,000 swine culled by the authorities.

According to Bulgaria's food safety agency, the latest ASF outbreak was detected on a swine farm in Brestak, Varna province. A quarantine zone three kilometres wide has been established around the affected village.
