PEDv detected at hog site in Alberta, Canada

The porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv) was detected at a 400-head hog operation in Alberta, Canada, the Alberta Pork Producers Development Corporation said.

It is the first time the disease strikes the Canadian province since 2014 when it was first found at a swine farm in Ontario and confirmed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Recent PEDv outbreaks were also reported in Manitoba, Quebec and Prince Edward Island.

While PEDv affects pigs, it does not pose a risk to human health, Alberta Pork said.

"Any place off-farm, such as an abattoir, should be considered as a potential source for bringing disease to your herd. Producers are reminded to review their farms' biosecurity policies regularly and consult Alberta Pork or your herd veterinarian as required," the organisation advised in a disease notification to producers.
