Australia's Beef Exports Rise 9%
Australia's boneless beef exports for 2004 were 8.7% higher than a year ago at 913,799 tons, according to the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. That is a reflection of higher export demand from Asia, especially Japan, due to bans on Canadian and US beef.
Japan purchased 393,471 tons, 41% higher than 2003; more than 40% of the 2004 total. South Korea bought 93,310 tons, about 1/3 higher. US imports were down 5% at 349,751 tons. Canada and Taiwan also bought less Australian beef; 7,452 tons and 26,454 tons respectively.
