Cambodian ministry held meeting to tackle low prices impacting meat production sector

Cambodia's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries recently convened a meeting on January 4 to discuss concerns plaguing its meat production industry.
The focus of the discussion was on the unusually low market prices threatening the sector's stability. The meeting, led by Agriculture Minister Dith Tina, was aimed at developing a comprehensive understanding of the situation and the supply-demand dynamics influencing animal production and pricing.
Bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders, including farmers, importers, slaughterhouses, distributors and vendors, the meeting underscored a collective approach to the crisis. It is expected that a detailed study will delve deeper into the issue, providing solutions beneficial to all involved parties.
Meanwhile, the focus remains on ensuring the welfare of consumers.
Tan Phanara, director-general of the General Directorate of Animal Health and Production, is slated to lead emergency meetings with specialist working groups. This initiative aims to maintain stable market prices, which have been severely affected by the ongoing crisis. The market instability has resulted in local producers voicing concerns over the significant price decline for cattle and pigs.
The concern is largely attributed to the illegal importation of low-quality frozen meat from neighboring countries, which is sold at low prices in the market. The Cambodia Livestock Raisers Association (CLRA) reported substantial hardships for pig and cattle farmers. Prices have reportedly dropped to a KHR6,000 (US$1.46) to KHR7,000 (US$1.71) per kilogramm3 for cattle and KHR5,000-6,000 (US$1.22-1.46) for pork.
Kun Nhim, head of the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE), assured measures are being taken to combat illegal meat imports. He also highlighted the need for more explicit regulations concerning meat imports, calling for proper storage and licensing for businesses involved.
