Additional 20,000 tonnes of frozen pork to be released from China's state reserves on January 9

The China Merchandise Reserve Management Centre published a notice on its website notifying the release of 20,000 tonnes more frozen pork to be released from state reserves, reported Reuters.

This follows more than 100,000 tonnes of frozen pork released from China's state reserves since December last year to supplement dwindling supplies of the meat following the African swine fever outbreak in the country.

The release of more frozen pork comes as the country anticipates high demand for pork for the upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations, which begin at end January 2020. The period is the country's peak for pork consumption.

China has recently approved more overseas meat import sources, with meat prices soaring worldwide.
