China a key market for Norwegian salmon in Asia

China could soon take over from Japan and become Norway's largest market for the export of salmon to Asia.

In 2009, Norway's export of salmon to China increased by nearly 60%.

Currently, Norway is selling 23,000 tonnes of salmon to China annually. Last year, the export was worth NOK800 million (US$140.2 million).

The main reason for the increase is the rising affluence among the Chinese, and their focus on healthy food, according to Lu Lu Schjerven, representative from seafood production company, Lerøy.
