Poultry association in Bangladesh plans to sell eggs, chicken at fair prices in Dhaka
The Bangladesh Poultry Association (BPA) has announced plans to sell eggs and chicken at fair prices starting January 12 at 20 locations across Dhaka, Bangladesh, as part of a smart market management initiative aimed at stabilising prices ahead of Ramadan.
BPA president Sumon Hawlader shared the news at a press conference held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on January 4.
"We will gradually expand this initiative to 100 locations, offering eggs, frozen chicken, and other agricultural products at limited profits," he said.
During the press conference, Hawlader presented a 10-point charter of demands to the Bangladeshi government. He criticised the corporate sector's dominance in the poultry market, which he argued is harming marginal farmers.
"Corporate companies are controlling the market by producing feed, chicks, eggs, and chicken. This prevents marginal farmers from competing fairly," he explained.
Hawlader also highlighted the challenges farmers face due to price hikes caused by syndicates in the feed and chick markets.
"The unreasonable price hike caused by feed and chick syndicates is a significant problem for marginal farmers, making it hard for them to cover production costs," he added. "This syndicate must be dismantled, and affordable feed and chicks must be ensured for farmers."
BPA demanded that corporate entities restrict their activities to producing feed and chicks, allowing farmers to focus on their production. It also called for the creation of a fair market system to protect farmers and urged the government to introduce loan and subsidy schemes.
These measures, Hawlader said, will enable farmers to increase production, foster rapid growth, and strengthen the domestic poultry industry.
