US National Cattlemen's Beef Association not happy over Golden Globes' vegan decision
Guests at the awards ceremony will be served plant-based meals due to climate change concerns, but the US beef group argues that United States cattle are raised sustainably, reported Bloomberg.
In a statement to the Golden Globes, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association cited a National Academy of Sciences study that said greenhouse gas emissions will only fall by 2.6% if all United States livestock was eliminated and all Americans switched to a vegan diet.
The US beef group said compared to rival livestock producers globally, the American cattle industry produces 10 to 50 times lower carbon footprint.
Big US retailers and investors have put pressure on American livestock producers to reduce their carbon footprint, which primarily comes from cattle farts, burps and manure. Major producers such as Tyson Foods and Cargill have promised big reductions in their greenhouse gas emissions.
The Golden Globes' served fish and went gluten-free in 2018 and has not featured steak as a main course since 2017.
