Mekong Delta's 2011 shrimp output down 300,000 tonnes

Vietnam's Mekong Delta's 2011 shrimp output dropped by 86,000 tonnes from 2010 to 300,000 tonnes last year, local news reported Thursday (Jan 5).

The decrease was attributed to diseases which occurred in 77,492 hectares of aquaculture areas, affecting 13 billion of shrimp last year, the newspaper said, citing the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development's Fisheries Directorate.

The most affected provinces were Soc Trang with 28,477 hectares and Bac Lieu with 16,500 hectares.

Last year, farmers in the Mekong Delta grew 565,000 hectares of prawn shrimp and 7,800 hectares of white-leg shrimp.
