Ranchers in US state Kansas seek help feeding snowbound cattle

Dead cattle are piling up in at least one south-western Kansas feedlot, as the area digs out of last week's big snowstorm. Ranchers have asked for help in getting water and feed to cattle, especially those stranded in pastures.

Haskell County feedlot owner Roy Brown told the Associated Press Wednesday (Jan 3) that he lost 450 cattle out of the 155,000 he has on feed.

Total livestock losses from the storm in Kansas are undetermined.

Brown said his losses were not as bad as he had feared, given the severity of the storm. In 1997, he lost 2,500 head to a snowstorm.
