India border customs seize 10,000 cattle smuggled from Bangladesh last year
A total of 10,239 cattle were seized by India's border security force (BSF, Meghalaya Frontier) in 2019 worth more than 160 million INR (~US$2.2 million; 1 INR = US$0.014), reported The Telegraph.
A BSF official said the cattle were usually smuggled in stuffed and cramped trucks with limbs and mouths tied up.
The official added that the recurrent cattle seizures showed that there is an increase in cattle smuggling attempts along the India-Bangladesh border last year. The smugglers used vulnerable routes but were ultimately caught by BSF officials.
The official also mentioned that auctioned cattle recycled for smuggling was a challenge to the BSF force.
