Chromium as an element was first discovered over 200 years ago. It is recognized as an essential trace mineral for animals for over 60 years. Chromium is found in soil in its tri-valent form (i.e. with 3 positive charges) whilst hexa- valent chromium (i.e. 6 positive charges) is of industrial origin and was found to be a carcinogen.
