India dairy institute relies on technology to develop milk products
India's National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) is employing advanced technologies to develop traditional milk products (TDPs).
The institute has made several innovations such as mechanisation of manufacturing processes, development of low calorie products, membrane processing, retort processing, osmotic dehydration, quick freezing technology, and sugar crystallization.
Milk currently holds 67% of the livestock gross domestic product (GDP), 22% of agricultural GDP and about 5.5% of the national GDP. Household and non-organised sector together handle about 82% of the sector, while the organised sector contributes 18%.
About 50% of the total milk production is used in the manufacturing of indigenous dairy products.
