800 kilos of expired meat seized in Manila

The National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) in Manila, Philippines seized about 800 kilograms of double dead meat (botcha) and expired meat at a public market near Divisoria in Manila on Sunday.

According to Dr. Joey Diaz of the NMIS, vendors were able to smuggle the expired meat because they mix the botcha with the fresh ones.

The inspection board has already launched an investigation to confiscate more dead meat possibly circulating in other public markets.

It also asked consumers to only buy fresh meat bearing the inspection certification stamp.

Authorities said consumers must make sure that the meat they are buying are placed in a proper storage facility to avoid contamination.

They also warned consumers that more tainted meat may enter the market during the holidays.
