Chile's salmon industry stays strong amid tough time
The Chilean salmon industry managed to stay strong in 2009 despite the difficulties that this sector has faced.
According to some figures submitted by the Chilean National Customs Service, the salmon industry exported US$ 109.5 million from the 10th Region (Las Lagos) in November and counted for 54% of that region's exports in the period. Overall, the country exported nearly US$ 135.6 million in November.
Moreover, this territory represents 81 % of the Chilean salmon exports; while the 11th Region (Aysén) counts for 15 % of those sales. The VIII Region (BÃo BÃo) represents three %; and the 12th Region (Magallanes) stands for the remaining 1%.
In terms of markets, the main trade partners for the 10th Region are still Japan (47 % of the exports) and USA (15 %).
