Hong Kong bans eggs from Taiwan

Hong Kong has suspended poultry egg imports from Taiwan, the SAR's Centre for Food Safety (CFS) announced.

The development came after the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reported that a Taiwanese farm in the Yilan County was hit by a H5 avian influenza outbreak.

In addition, previous egg-import suspensions on Taiwan's Penghu and Hualien counties are currently ongoing for the same reason.

While Hong Kong does not import live poultry or poultry meat from Taiwan, it permitted small shipments of eggs, which amounted to 5.8 million from January to October 2014, according to a CFS spokesman.

"We will closely monitor information issued by the OIE on the avian influenza outbreaks in Taiwan, and take appropriate action in response to the situation," he added.
