Vietnam's pig exports to Cambodia increase sharply

Vietnamese pig exports to Cambodia has recently increased to 1,000-1,500 heads daily.

The massive export of pigs to Cambodia pushed up pig prices by VND3,000-VND3,200/kg (US$0.16-US$0.17) to VND37,000-VND38,000/kg (US$2-US$2.06).

Meanwhile, pork prices are also surging in Ho Chi Minh City markets with one kg offered at VND42,000-VND46,000 (US$2.3-US$2.5), up VND4,000-VND5,000 (US$0.216-US$0.27) from a week earlier.

Cambodian pig farmers have been protesting against a flux of imports from Thailand, which have pushed down prices and caused the closure of several domestic pig farms there. But the director general of Cambodia's Animal Health and Production Department raised concerns whether local producers could meet domestic demand. The director general said there is a daily shortage of pigs in Cambodia, as local producers do not have the ability to raise enough pigs to meet current demand. A lack of foreign competition could also force prices beyond the means of ordinary consumers.
