Coal mine in China's Shandong converts into pig farm

A coal mine in China's eastern Shandong province has been converted into a pig farm. The facility was closed down last year due to its small scale of operations and lack of profitability.

24 piggeries replaced former workshops in the coal mine and laid-off miners were rehired to run the farm. Many of the miners had experience in farming.

A former mine manager said the goal is to raise over 10,000 pigs in 2006, and turn the farm into a major pig producer in the region.
