Argentina denounces illegal irrigation channels

The farming industry of Argentina has confirmed the existence of illegal irrigation channels built by farmers around the town of San Antonio de Areco.

The illegal channels were blamed as the main cause for the flooding which forced the evacuation of 3,000 people by both the Bueno Aires province and federal governments.

Pedro Apaolaza, head of the Carbap farming sector association, said they have to reverse this situation, and that the authorities should learn how and where the channels are built before thinking of a plan.

The channels exist in the entire Buenos Aires province, Apaolaza said.

Both administrations vowed to file lawsuits.
