Philippine Feed Weekly: Feed prices steady as livestock industry gears up for 2012 (week ended Dec 21, 2011)

An eFeedLink Exclusive

Price summary

Philippine feed prices remained stable over the week as the local livestock industry prepares for 2012.

Corn continues its price rise streak which alarmed livestock raisers while prices of other feed grains remained constant.

Analysts believe that prices might significantly change on the first two weeks of 2012 as demand for meat may falter due to the deluge of meat imports this year.

Market Analysis

Meanwhile, the government said among other sectors, the agriculture industry suffered the full brunt of climate change this year.

According to the Department of Agriculture, the severe impact has thwarted the government's plan to raise rice and corn production this year, then moving on towards rice self-sufficiency in 2013.

The DA has hoped of another record corn as its production in the first half totalled to 3.31 million tonnes. Unfortunately, the Philippines suffered from a series of devastating typhoons in the third quarter which nearly wiped out output gains of corn and other feed grains. By the third quarter, farm growth has decelerated to 4.28% for the nine-month period from the 5.48% growth in the first half. The DA also expects fourth quarter growth to be dismal.

Although 2012 is likely to be grim due to the effects of typhoons and ill-effects of torrential monsoons, most recent is tropical depression Sendong (international name Washi) which gravely ravaged the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro in Northern Mindanao and Dumaguete City in Central Visayas, the government and stakeholders are optimistic for a better performance in 2012.
