Taiwan allays fear over Chinese farm produce
In an attempt to address the concerns of Taiwanese farmers, President Ma Ying-jeou has promised not to open Taiwan to more Chinese agricultural products.
Taiwanese farmers feared that a planned trade pact with China will harm Taiwanese agriculture. The proposed trade pact in question is the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA).
Ma said the upcoming ECFA talks with China would not touch upon issues of opening up Taiwan's market to Chinese agricultural products. Instead, he promised that the government would seek to expand market access for Taiwanese agricultural products in China.
