Hunan's Dong Ting fish popular in Hong Kong

As Hong Kong lifted its ban on more than 30 types of aquatic products from Mainland China, seafood supplies have now largely resumed to pre-ban levels.

Zeng Nan Hua, Hunan's aquatic expert said that throughout the ban, Hunan's Da Tong Hu brand of bighead carp were allowed into Hong Kong markets, greatly enhancing its popularity.

The types of fish allowed has since been expanded to grass carp, crucian carp, swamp eel and Chinese mitten crab. One such company exporting such products is Heping Aquatics. CEO of the company Liu Heping said Dong Ting fish, a fish from the Dong Ting Lake, was immensely popular with the Hong Kong market, with 5 tonnes sold every day in the Kowloon Wholesale Market.

With an area of 120,000-Mu (1 mu = 0.0667 hectare) and connected with Dong Ting Lake, Da Tong Lake's shallow bed and rich resources are ideal for the Dong Ting fish. In recent years, local authorities have encouraged the use of sustainable aquaculture farming methods to farm the fish in the area, improving the fish's quality in the process.
