In January-September 2004, China exported 293,100 tons, or US$678 million worth of pork products (including fresh frozen pork, processed pork, pig entrails and offal, and live hogs), an increase of 38.24% and 46.41% respectively compared to the same period in 2003. Fresh frozen pork exports accounted for 69.89% of the total pork products exported and 46.62% of the export turnover, while processed pork exports constituted 29.59% of the total pork products exported and 26.94% of the export turnover. Live hog exports made up 26.3% of the total pork product exported.
In the first three quarters of 2004, China's fresh frozen pork exports rose by 40.02% to 204,800 tons, with revenue up remarkably by 76.39% to reach US$316 million compared to the same period in 2003. In January-September 2004, China imported 59,900 tons or US$44.9789 million worth of fresh frozen pork, a fall of 33.39% and 20.44% respectively compared to the corresponding period in 2003.
According to industry statistics, the price ratio of live hog to corn in the third quarter of 2004 far exceeded the breakeven ratio of 5.5:1 to reach an average of 6.486:1, a rise of 17.52% compared to the same period of 2003. Profit margins for live hog production in the third quarter of 2004 were the highest in recent years.
