Russia, Canada discussed ractopamine issues

On the initiative of the Canadian party, telephone discussions between Russia's Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) and Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) were held to tackle ractopamine issues.

The dialogue was between Rosselkhoznadzor specialists headed by Vasily Lavrovski, Head of the Department for Inspection Work in the Framework of International Cooperation and WTO in the Veterinary Field, and Yves Labbe, Head of International Programmes, CFIA.

Consultations have continued active dialogue between the two countries devoted to possibility of approving Canadian Protocol on ractopamine- and other productivity stimulant-free products exported to the Customs Union.

Yves Labbe expressed interest of the Canadian party in export of animal products to the Russian market on condition that all the CU requirements are met. He also highly estimated efficient and transparent work that the Rosselkhoznadzor specialists have been doing in this direction.

The CFIA specified that at all Canadian establishments there is a National Chemical Residue Monitoring Programme in place. If this programme is not implemented properly than a corrective action plan is worked out for such farms and holings that violated the requirements.

In this connection the Rosselkhoznadzor reminded the CFIA that to provide safety of product export it is necessary to act within the Customs Union Law which envisages full product compliance to the specified requirements.

Besides, the participants of the telephone consultations discussed a possibility of conducting another inspection of Canadian establishments which will be aimed at verification of the protocol operation efficiency after it has been approved.
