Peru sees 22% rise in fish export revenues in October

Peru's fish export revenues reach US$255.5 million during October 2012, a 21.9% rise over the same month in 2011.

In addition, the export volume grew by 15.7%, from 130,400 to 151,000 tonnes, the Ministry of Production (Produce) informed.

These increases were due primarily to higher sales of fishmeal and frozen products.

Between January and October 2012, the sale abroad of 1,932,400 tonnes generated US$2,988.5 million, while in the same period last year 1,816,100 tonnes were exported for US$2,840.1 million.

Meanwhile, in October 2012 96,800 tonnes of fish meal were exported, while in the same month last year, 76,500 tonnes (26.5 per cent) were sent abroad.

As regard value, in the tenth month of this year fish meal for US$145.7 million was exported, that is to say, 52.7% more than in October 2011, when the figure totalled US$95.4 million.

Between January and October 2012 were exported 1,242,600 tonnes of fishmeal, 3.9% more than in the same period in 2011 (1,195,500 tonnes).

The main markets for Peruvian fishmeal were China, Germany, Japan, Vietnam and Chile, which bought 82.8% of total sales up to October 2012.

October exports increased foreign sales of fishmeal in the first 10 months to US$1,629.1 million, 0.9% less than in the same period 2011 (US$1,643.2 million).

In October 2012, about 42,100 tonnes of frozen products were also exported, a volume which accounts for a rise of 46.1% against the 28,800 tonnes exported a year earlier.

In the first 10 months of 2012, 329,200 tonnes of frozen products were sold abroad, 4.8% less than during the same period in 2011 (345,600 tonnes).
